As the final week of the Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Fellows (BFTF) program approached, a mix of excitement and melancholy filled the air. We had spent three weeks learning, growing, and forging bonds that felt like they’d last a lifetime. Now, the culmination of our journey awaited us in Washington, D.C., with experiences that would leave an indelible mark on our hearts.

Monday:
The week began with a grueling 13-hour drive from West Lafayette to Washington, D.C. Our destination was Georgetown University, where we would stay for the remainder of the program. Despite our exhaustion, a few of us couldn’t resist the urge to explore the historic campus. The grandeur of Georgetown, with its ivy-clad buildings and vibrant student life, served as the perfect backdrop for the final chapter of our BFTF adventure.

Tuesday:
Tuesday’s itinerary took us to the heart of Philadelphia, where we immersed ourselves in American history at the Ben Franklin Museum. The Reading Terminal Market offered a feast for the senses with its eclectic mix of foods and bustling atmosphere. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the visit to the Rocky Steps, where we channeled our inner champions and felt a sense of triumph. The ride back to D.C. was filled with animated discussions and reflections on the day’s adventures.

Wednesday:
Wednesday was a day filled with anticipation and excitement, as it held the surprise I had hinted at in my earlier blogs. For the first time in BFTF history, we not only visited the White House but were also given the extraordinary opportunity to go inside. Walking through the halls where history has been made was an awe-inspiring experience that none of us will soon forget.

As we stepped through the iconic doors, the sense of privilege and reverence was overwhelming. We marveled at the historic rooms and the priceless artifacts, feeling the weight of the moment. This unique experience brought history to life in a way that was deeply personal and profoundly moving.

After our remarkable visit to the White House, we continued our exploration of Washington, D.C. We visited the Washington Monument, its towering presence a testament to the nation’s enduring spirit. Our next stop was the National Gallery of Art, where we immersed ourselves in the beauty and diversity of the art collections. Each piece told a story, sparking conversations and reflections on culture and creativity. The day was a tapestry of awe and inspiration, making it one of the most memorable experiences of the entire program.

Thursday:
Thursday was a day of gratitude and reflection as we visited the State Department. Meeting the people behind BFTF and seeing the Secretary in person was a profound experience. We spent the afternoon visiting the Jefferson Memorial, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, and Lincoln Memorial. Each monument stirred powerful emotions, reminding us of the ideals and struggles that have shaped the nation. A visit to the Natural History Museum rounded out the day, sparking our curiosity and wonder.

Friday:
Friday was a day of mixed emotions. We toured the U.S. Capitol, a symbol of democracy and governance, before enjoying some free time to soak in the city one last time. The evening brought a pizza party sponsored by Anatoli, which turned into an impromptu celebration of our time together. As we shared stories and laughter, the reality of our impending goodbyes set in. Tears flowed freely as we reminisced about the incredible memories we had created over the past four weeks.

Saturday:
Saturday marked the day of departure, and with it, a wave of profound emotions. As we packed our bags and prepared to say our farewells, the weight of the moment was palpable. The bonds we had formed felt unbreakable, and the thought of parting ways was almost unbearable. Yet, amidst the tears and hugs, there was a shared understanding that this was not the end.

Every evening and free moment during this final week was spent cherishing our time together. As I reflect on these past four weeks, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the 53 international friends who have become like family. Though we are now scattered across the globe, the memories we’ve created and the connections we’ve forged will endure. This is not a goodbye—it’s a simple “see you later.” The BFTF experience has been a transformative journey, and I carry the hope that our paths will cross again, enriched by the shared adventures and the promise of future reunions.

In the end, the BFTF program has given us more than just knowledge and experiences—it has given us a family that transcends borders. As we step back into our daily lives, we carry with us the lessons learned, the friendships made, and the promise that no matter where we go, we are all connected by the unforgettable journey of BFTF.
