Jasmine Weekly: Week 3 at BFTF – a journey of growth, discovery, and heartfelt memories

The third week of BFTF was a whirlwind of excitement, learning, and deep connections. Each day brought new experiences that challenged us, inspired us, and brought us closer together. Reflecting on this week, I realize just how much we’ve grown—not just as individuals, but as a tight-knit community. From stepping into the role of teachers to exploring the bustling city of Chicago, and from cooking up a storm for our host families to volunteering for a worthy cause, this week was packed with moments that will stay with us forever.

Monday was amazing because our BFTF Fellows became the teachers! We got to share stories and facts about our home countries with the kids at the Purdue Boiler Kid’s Camp. Seeing their eyes light up while learning about all the different countries was incredible. Plus, it was great catching up with our Resident Assistant Austin, who’s working at the camp. Afterward, our host family took us to Walmart to buy groceries for the international cuisine night, which felt like a real adventure.

Tuesday was all about food and fun! Our BFTF Fellows flaunted their cooking skills at the International Dinner. I made wiener schnitzel with parsley potatoes and cranberry jam. It was so rewarding to see everyone enjoy it. We wrapped up our last lecture on International Relations and Diplomacy, which felt bittersweet. Our host families and mentors were blown away by the diverse dishes, from borscht to torrijas. With our stomachs full and hearts happy, we started getting excited for our Chicago trip!

Wednesday was an adventureous day in Chicago! The view from Willis Tower was jaw-dropping. We watched a breathtaking performance of “SIX” at the Nederlander Theater and learned so much about Chicago’s architecture on a river cruise. Some of us even tried deep-dish pizza for the first time! It was such a memorable day exploring one of the largest cities in the United States.

Thursday felt truly meaningful. Our BFTF Fellows volunteered at Lafayette Urban Ministry, doing tasks like cleaning buses, packing meals, and building shelves. Jeff summed it up perfectly: “The greatness in today’s work rests in its meaning for the community.” Serving the Lafayette community that has been so kind to us felt incredibly rewarding.

Friday was intense but inspiring! Our BFTF Fellows presented their community-related projects, tackling issues from disaster relief to civic education. It was stressful, but seeing everyone’s hard work pay off was so worth it. Congratulations to all our Fellows on completing the academic part of the program! Our host family took us out for a celebratory dinner, and later we had a cozy bonfire with some other Fellows.

Saturday started early with a trip to Fair Oaks Farm. Later, our host dad showed us around his own farm and took us for a ride in his new tractor, which was so cool! In the evening, we watched “The Lion,” and the whole day had me feeling a mix of emotions. I cried a lot, just overwhelmed by everything.

Sunday was our last day with the host family, and it was tough. We went to church and then to Dollar General for some last-minute things. The final reception was hard because we had to say goodbye to two of our mentors, Jeff and Asta. It really hit that BFTF is nearing its end. But despite the sadness, I’m excited and ready for the final week.

As I look back on the third week of BFTF, I’m filled with a sense of accomplishment and gratitude. This week has been a journey of growth, discovery, and heartfelt memories. From teaching kids about our cultures to exploring the vibrant city of Chicago, and from sharing our culinary traditions to volunteering in the community, every moment has enriched us in ways we never expected.

We’ve tackled academic challenges, showcased our talents, and bonded over shared experiences. As we approach the final week, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions—sadness that this incredible experience is coming to an end, but also excitement for what lies ahead. The friendships we’ve formed and the lessons we’ve learned will stay with us long after BFTF is over.

Here’s to making the most of our last week together, cherishing every moment, and continuing to grow and inspire each other. The journey isn’t over yet, and I can’t wait to see what the final days have in store for us.
