Jasmine Weekly: Week Two at BFTF: A Burst of Learning and Adventure

Hey everyone!

Can you believe it’s already been two weeks since we started this incredible journey at BFTF? Time really does fly when you’re having fun; each day seems to bring more excitement and discovery than the last, and let me tell you, Week Two was nothing short of amazing!

(I found out something very exciting this week and I am very happy about it 😉 What exactly that is you will only find out in the last Jasmine Weekly so stay tuned)

We dove headfirst into the week with a deep dive into International Relations and Diplomacy. From understanding the complexities of global politics to exploring the art of negotiation and diplomacy, our minds were buzzing with new perspectives and ideas.

And of course, we didn’t just stick to textbooks—we had a talent show that showcased the extraordinary talents of the Fellows. And let me just say, my fellow Fellows blew my mind. From musical compositions created on the spot to some seriously daring acts (yes, I set myself on fire—safely, of course!), it was a night filled with laughter, cheers, and a whole lot of applause. Our host families were also invited!

Tuesday was a bit of a reflective day. We spent time brainstorming and refining our community projects, which are shaping up to be pretty awesome, if I do say so myself. And then came the evening masquerade! Imagine Eminem, Kylie Jenner, and a ketchup-mustard-mayo trio walking around—it was a blast seeing everyone’s unique take on the theme.

Wednesday was a day of adventure and exploration. We embarked on a whirlwind tour of Indianapolis, visiting iconic landmarks like the Indiana State House, the Soldiers & Sailors Monument, and the fascinating Eiteljorg Museum. We even squeezed in some shopping at the Fashion Mall at Keystone before ending the day with a magical performance of The Wizard of Oz at Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre. It was a day filled with culture, history, unforgettable moments shared with new friends, and a lot of walking.

Thursday brought July 4th celebrations: BFTF style. We started with a lively game of Jeopardy (hosted by the amazing Sarah who always knows how to keep us entertained). In between the game, which was taken very seriously, and the evening fireworks show, we indulged in lots of delicious, stereotypical American food. Later we walked to the John T. Myers Pedestrian Bridge, which connects West Lafayette and Lafayette (it does not actually exist, BFTF fellows know what I mean). Experiencing the city’s Fourth of July festivities together for the first time made our bond as Fellows even stronger.

Friday was bittersweet. After a thought-provoking lecture on Intercultural Competence, we said heartfelt goodbyes to Harrison Hall and met our host families again, but this time they took us to their homes. The evening reception with our host families was filled with warmth and excitement as we embarked on a weekend full of new adventures and lifelong memories. It’s incredible how quickly bonds form—I already feel like part of my host family!

Saturday was a sunny delight. Some of us hit up a pool party, while others ventured to Indiana Beach. Well, for us it was all about exploring nature at Turkey Run State Park. Hiking trails, horseback riding, and a picknick. It was a perfect way to unwind after a busy week, enjoy the company of and bond with our host families, who welcomed us with open arms into their homes and hearts.

And Sunday? We went over to our neighbor, who also welcomed four fellows in their home and we had a little pool party and just relaxed for the day. It’s amazing how much you can pack into a weekend when you’re surrounded by awesome people and new experiences.

As we head into the third week, I can’t help but feel incredibly grateful for this opportunity. BFTF isn’t just about learning—it’s about building friendships, exploring new places, and discovering more about ourselves and the world around us. Here’s to another week of growth, laughter, and unforgettable memories!

Catch you all soon with more updates from the frontlines of BFTF life. Until then, stay curious and keep smiling!
